What is a good engagement rate?
It depends on the platform and the denominator. Follower-based on Instagram: 1–3% is average, 3–6% is good, above 6% is excellent. View-based on TikTok: 3–6% is average, above 10% is excellent. On YouTube, 2–4% of viewers engaging is normal and above 8% is exceptional. On X, most accounts sit under 1% follower-based. Smaller accounts almost always run higher rates than big ones — a 10k account at 6% is genuinely strong.
Which formula does this calculator use?
The one each platform’s ecosystem actually quotes: (likes + comments) ÷ followers for Instagram, (likes + comments + shares) ÷ views for TikTok, (likes + comments) ÷ views for YouTube, and (likes + replies + reposts) ÷ followers for X. Follower-based rates are what brands and influencer marketplaces use; view-based rates are what the platforms’ own analytics imply.
Why do brands care about engagement rate more than followers?
Because followers can be bought and engagement mostly can’t. A creator with 20,000 followers at 6% engagement typically outperforms one with 500,000 followers at 0.5% for actual conversions, which is why sponsorship rates are increasingly negotiated on engagement, not reach.
Should I use my last post or an average?
Average your last 10–12 posts and skip obvious outliers (a video that went viral, a giveaway). Brands will do exactly that when they audit you, so you want your quoted number to survive their spreadsheet.
