Frequently asked questions
How long should a YouTube title be?
Up to 100 characters are allowed, but search results truncate around 70 characters on desktop and closer to 40 on mobile and in suggested videos. The practical rule: make the first 40 characters carry the whole hook, and keep the total under 70 so nothing important gets cut.
Does the title actually affect the algorithm?
Indirectly but decisively. YouTube optimizes for click-through rate and watch time — the title (with the thumbnail) is what earns the click, and a title that overpromises kills average view duration when viewers bail. The algorithm doesn’t read your title for keywords the way 2015 SEO assumed; it measures how humans react to it.
Is a score of 100 the goal?
No. The score flags mechanical problems — truncation, caps shouting, burned-out clickbait phrases. A B-grade title with a genuinely interesting promise beats an A-grade generic one every time. Fix the reds, consider the yellows, then judge the promise yourself: would YOU click it next to 20 competitors?
Should I put keywords in my title for SEO?
Put the searched phrase in naturally if your video answers a search query ("how to edit podcast clips") — YouTube search still matches title text. For browse-driven content (most entertainment), curiosity beats keywords: write for the human scrolling, not the crawler.
